CAPO DI NOLI

1898, oil on canvas
Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne, Germany

The painting depicts a vibrant Mediterranean port on the Italian Riviera. Signac aimed to push every corner of the canvas to the extreme with pure color, focusing on texture rather than the “impression” of a natural scene. This bold use of color had a lasting impact on early 20th-century painters, influencing both French Fauves and German Expressionists.

PAUL SIGNAC (1863–1935)

French painter and neo-impressionist pioneer. Alongside Georges Seurat, Signac introduced divisionism (later called pointillism), inspiring new artistic expressions. His meticulous technique created vibrant landscapes and seascapes, blending color and nature to capture fleeting moments of beauty in kaleidoscopic vistas.
