UNDER THE GREAT WAVE OFF KANAGAWA

1830–1833, woodblock print Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC

The print depicting three boats moving through a stormtossed sea and Mount Fuji visible in the background. This is the first in a series of landscape prints entitled Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The use of Prussian blue in this work revolutionized Japanese prints. The Great Wave is the best-known work of ukiyo-e artists in Japan and all around the world.

HOKUSAI KATSUSHIKA (1760–1849)

One of Japan’s most outstanding painters. An extremely prolific artist, he is famous for creating remarkable and colorful ukiyo-e woodblocks. By combining different techniques, he captured the feel of 19th century Japan in his rich work, providing significant influence for European impressionism.
